Site Description

Midway along the Clwydian range, this site is approximately 3 miles down wind of Ruthin in a WSW wind. Moel Fammau summit represents the highest point in the Clwydian range at 1800ft / 550m ASL. An interesting site, though not for beginners as the site can become very turbulent. Due to the proximity of the coast, this site is often affected by a sea breeze during the summer.

Parking

Park in either of the two car parks at the top of the pass. Parking fees are charged (approx £1/day)

CarryUp

Moderately difficult. Take the upper footpath from the north car park towards the summit. It's a steady climb with a gain of height of about 350ft / 105m from car park to take-off area. Only the fitter HG pilots will carry up in one go!

Takeoff and Top Landing

Moderately easy, but slopes towards take off in both wind directions. When top landing, approach from direction of fence at rear of top landing area, taking care not to fly behind the fence.

Bottom Landing

The designated bottom landing field is a 1.5 mile glide from take-off, and is conveniently next to the 'Griffin' Pub on the A494 Mold to Ruthin road, at Grid Reference SJ143593.
Emergency bottom landings may be made in the 'stump' field directly in front of and below take-off. This field is limited in size and slopes away towards power lines beyond the stump in the middle of the field, so approach this field as low as possible over the gate in the corner nearest to take-off.

Notes
